THERAPY APPROACHES · PROVO, UTAH

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

The thought arrives so fast it feels like fact. CBT is the practice of catching it, checking it, and building a life that is not run by it.

The Story Your Mind Tells You at Full Speed

Something happens, and half a second later you already know what it means: they are upset with me, I ruined it, this always happens, I cannot handle this. The conclusion arrives before you had a vote, and your mood and your evening follow it.

Those automatic thoughts feel like perception, but they are interpretation, and they run in grooves that were cut years ago. Anxiety reads danger into neutral rooms. Depression reads failure into ordinary days.

CBT is built on a simple, sturdy observation: thoughts, feelings and behavior pull on each other. Change any one of them deliberately and the others start to move.

How CBT Works

First you learn to see the machinery: the situations, the automatic thoughts, the feelings they produce, and what you do next. Writing it down sounds unglamorous and works remarkably well, because patterns that run in the dark do not survive the light.

Then you test the thoughts instead of obeying them. Not forced positivity, but honest questions: what is the evidence, what would I tell a friend, what else could this mean? Meanwhile behavioral work rebuilds the life anxiety and depression have shrunk, one approach and one activity at a time.

CBT is one of the most researched psychotherapies in existence, and it is deliberately practical. You leave with tools you can run without us.

What CBT Helps With

CBT has strong evidence across most of what walks through our door.

Anxiety & panic. Catching catastrophic predictions and retraining the body's response to them.

Depression. Interrupting the loop of dark conclusions and withdrawn days that feed each other.

Trauma-related beliefs. The verdicts trauma writes, like it was my fault or I am not safe anywhere, examined and rewritten.

Anger & irritability. Finding the interpretation that lights the fuse, and the pause that defuses it.

Addiction & habits. Mapping triggers, thoughts and payoffs, and building different exits.

Child & teen worries. Age-fit CBT that gives kids and teens words and tools for what is spinning inside.

What CBT Actually Looks Like

Sessions are structured and collaborative. You set an agenda together, work a specific problem with a specific tool, and leave with something to try before next week. The between-session practice is not homework for its own sake; it is where the change actually happens.

Expect your therapist to be active: asking questions, drawing the loop on paper, role-playing the conversation you are dreading. Expect to be asked what the data from your own week says.

Progress is measurable, which people find either annoying or deeply reassuring, and usually both.

Common Questions About CBT

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: a structured, evidence-based approach that changes unhelpful patterns of thinking and behavior, and with them, how you feel.

  • No. CBT is accurate thinking. Sometimes the accurate thought is hard; the point is that it is yours, examined, rather than automatic.

  • CBT is designed to be time-limited. Many people see real movement in 8 to 16 sessions, with skills that keep working after.

  • Usually, and it is small and specific: an experiment, a log, one avoided thing approached. It is also where most of the change lives.

Questions About Our Services

  • Yes. We accept Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, DMBA, EMI, PEHP, Select Health, UMR, United Healthcare and University of Utah plans, and TRICARE is coming soon. Participation varies by clinician, so we check your plan before your first session.

  • Our self-pay rate is $150 for a 60 minute session, the same for every therapist on the team.

  • That is what the free 15 minute call is for. Tell us what has been going on and we will tell you who fits, which approach we would start with, and when that person can see you.
