You Already Talk About Yourself in Parts

Part of me wants to leave, part of me is terrified to. Part of me knows better, and some other part orders the drink anyway. Everyone talks like this, because it is accurate: a mind is not one voice, it is a committee.

Trouble starts when parts are stuck in extreme roles. A critic that flogs you before anyone else can. A numbing part that reaches for the phone, the fridge or the bottle the moment feeling starts. A wall that goes up exactly when you most want to let someone in.

Internal Family Systems starts from a premise that changes everything downstream: none of these parts are defects. Every one of them took its job for a reason, usually a good one, usually a long time ago.

Parts, Protectors, and the Self

IFS, developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, maps the inner system in a practical way. Wounded young parts carry the original pain: shame, terror, the feeling of being unlovable. Protective parts organize life to keep that pain from ever surfacing, some by managing and perfecting, some by dousing the alarm with distraction or substances the moment it fires.

Underneath all of it, IFS holds that there is a Self that is not a part: the calm, curious center that is still there even on the worst day. Therapy works by helping you lead from that place, getting to know protectors, earning their trust, and finally unburdening the young parts they have been guarding.

Change in IFS does not come from arguing with yourself or forcing discipline onto a part that will not comply. It comes from the inside relationships changing, which is why the shifts tend to hold.

What IFS Helps With

IFS is a natural fit wherever the problem feels like an inner war.

Trauma & complex trauma. IFS was shaped around trauma survivors, and it pairs powerfully with EMDR.

Self-criticism & shame. When the harshest voice in your life is your own, and quieting it has never worked.

Anxiety. Worry and vigilance understood as protectors that never learned the danger has passed.

Depression. Including the shut-down, nothing-matters state that IFS treats as a part, not a life sentence.

Addiction & compulsive patterns. Firefighter parts that douse pain fast, and the cycle of bingeing and shame that follows.

Relationship patterns. The same fight, the same wall, the same exile of closeness, run by parts doing old jobs.

What IFS Therapy Actually Looks Like

It is quieter than it sounds. Your therapist helps you notice what is present: where you feel it, what it says, how old it seems. You might spend a session simply getting to know the part of you that always says everything is fine.

There are no worksheets and no arguing with thoughts. The therapist's job is to keep you in that curious, unhurried place while parts show you what they have been carrying, and protectors decide, at their own pace, whether they can stand down.

People are often surprised by how much affection they end up feeling for parts they spent decades hating. That turn, from war to relationship, is where the change comes from.

Common Questions About IFS

  • An evidence-based approach that works with the natural multiplicity of the mind: wounded parts, the protectors that guard them, and the calm Self underneath, so the system can heal from the inside.

  • No. Parts are a normal feature of every mind. IFS simply works with them directly instead of pretending the mind speaks with one voice.

  • Guided, curious attention inward: noticing a part, where it lives in the body, what it fears, and what it is protecting, at a pace your protectors agree to.

  • Beautifully. IFS earns permission from the system's protectors, and EMDR reprocesses what the wounded parts carry, so each makes the other safer and faster.
