You Have Been in Trance Today Already
You drove somewhere and could not remember the drive. You read a page and were somewhere else entirely. Absorption is a normal state the brain drops into every day, and it happens to be a state in which the mind is unusually open to useful suggestion.
Clinical hypnosis simply uses that state deliberately. With a trained clinician guiding it, the same absorption that lets a movie make you cry can help a nervous system unclench patterns it has held for years.
It bears no resemblance to stage hypnosis. You are awake, aware, and in control the entire time, and you cannot be made to do anything against your will. If anything, people report being more focused than usual, not less.

How Clinical Hypnosis Works
Your therapist guides you into a relaxed, focused state, usually with breath, imagery and attention. In that state, the analytical, objecting part of the mind quiets enough for new associations to take hold: safety where there was alarm, ease where there was compulsion, distance where there was overwhelm.
Suggestions are built with you beforehand, in plain language, aimed at what you want changed. Nothing is inserted that you did not agree to. Many people also learn self-hypnosis, so the tool comes home with them.
At Healing Within, hypnosis is rarely a standalone treatment. It is woven into trauma work alongside EMDR and IFS, where a calm, resourced state makes the deeper work more tolerable and more durable.
What Clinical Hypnosis Helps With
Hypnosis is a tool, not a religion. Here is where we actually use it.
Anxiety & stress. Training the nervous system to find and return to a calm state on purpose.
Trauma work. Building safety, containment and distance so trauma processing stays tolerable.
Sleep. Quieting the 2 a.m. committee and rebuilding the runway into sleep.
Habits & compulsions. Loosening automatic patterns and strengthening the pause before them.
Pain & tension. Long-studied hypnotic strategies for turning down the volume on chronic tension.
Depression. As an adjunct: building access to motivation, energy and self-compassion.
What a Hypnosis Session Actually Looks Like
You sit comfortably and follow your therapist's voice. Induction takes a few minutes; the middle of the session is guided work in that focused state; and you come back gradually, alert and clear. Most people describe it as deeply restful.
You will remember the session. You could open your eyes at any point, and some people occasionally do, which is fine. The state serves the work; it is not the point in itself.
Expect it as part of a plan: assessment first, clear goals, and hypnosis used where it genuinely helps rather than as a party trick.
Common Questions About Clinical Hypnosis
No. All hypnosis is ultimately self-hypnosis; the clinician guides, you allow. You stay aware and in control throughout.
Hypnotizability varies, but most people can reach a useful level of absorption. If it is not your tool, we will say so and use something else.
Yes. Clinical hypnosis is not amnesia. Most people remember it clearly and describe it as focused rest.
Clinical hypnosis has decades of research, particularly for anxiety, pain and habit change, and is used here alongside established trauma treatments rather than instead of them.
Questions About Our Services
Yes. We accept Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, DMBA, EMI, PEHP, Select Health, UMR, United Healthcare and University of Utah plans, and TRICARE is coming soon. Participation varies by clinician, so we check your plan before your first session.
Our self-pay rate is $150 for a 60 minute session, the same for every therapist on the team.
That is what the free 15 minute call is for. Tell us what has been going on and we will tell you who fits, which approach we would start with, and when that person can see you.
